Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian on Tuesday advanced to the women's singles round of 16 at the Pan Pacific Open WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo, Japan, prize money USD 1,064,510, after defeating Russian Alina Charaeva 6-2 6-3.
It took Cristian, 27, 42nd ranked, an hour and 34 minutes to prevail over qualifier Charaeva, 23,150th.
The Romanian had also won their first meet, in the 2021 qualifying round for the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, 4-6 6-1 6-2.
For her performance in Tokyo so far, Cristian won USD15,700 and 60 WTA singles points, and in the round of 16 she will face another Russian, Ekaterina Alexandrova, the third seed.
This will be the first meet between Cristian and Alexandrova, 30, ranked 12th.
