Romania's economy grew by 0.6% in 2025, but ended the year on technical recession, after the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) decreased by 1.9% in Q4 2025 from Q3 2025, the second consecutive quarter of decline, according to estimated flash data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In Q3 2025, Romania's economy declined 0.2% from the previous quarter.

According to INS data, seasonally adjusted GDP in Q4 2025 decreased by 1.9% on a quarterly basis. As against the same quarter of 2024, the Gross Domestic Product decreased by 1.6%.

In 2025, the Gross Domestic Product increased by 0.6%, year-on-year.

"As a result of the revision of the quarterly unadjusted GDP series by including the estimate of the Gross Domestic Product for the fourth quarter of 2025 in the quarterly series, the seasonally adjusted series was recalculated, the volume indices being revised compared to the second provisional version of the Gross Domestic Product for the third quarter of 2025, published in press release no. 6 of January 9, 2026, as follows: the results of the first quarter of 2025, as against the fourth quarter of 2024, were revised from 100.1% to 99.4%; the results of the second quarter of 2025, as against the first quarter of 2025, were revised from 101.1% to 101.0%; the results of the third quarter of 2025, as against the second quarter of 2025 were revised from 99.8% to 99.9%. The seasonally adjusted series are recalculated quarterly in accordance with European practice," according to INS.

The International Monetary Fund estimated in October last year an economic growth of up to 1% for Romania in 2025, while the World Bank predicted in a January 2026 report an advance of 0.8% for 2025.

In its latest report published in November last year, the European Commission reduced to 0.7% its estimates of Romania's economic growth.
