Romanian players Bianca Mei-Rosu and Alesia Sferlea on Wednesday advanced to the second stage of the women's singles groups at the European Under-21 Table Tennis Championships in Cluj-Napoca.
Mei-Rosu won the Fourth Group, with maximum points (6), according to the website of the Romanian Table Tennis Federation, after defeating German Josephina Neumann, 3-0 (11-8, 12-10, 11-7), Slovakian Dominika Wiltschkova, 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-7), and Serbian Maja Vanjo, 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-7).
Sferlea finished second in Group 6, after victories against Denmark's Emma Clement, 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5, 11-9), and Belgium's Eloise Duvivier, 3-1 (11-5, 9-11, 13-11, 11-8), and a defeat against Czech Veronika Polakova, 1-3 (11-2, 10-12, 9-11, 9-11).
In Group 2, compatriot Patricia Stoica finished last (4), with one win, 3-2 (4-11, 14-16, 11-7, 11-2, 11-4) against Belgian Lilou Massart, and two defeats, 2-3 (2-11, 13-11, 11-8, 4-11, 8-11) against Danish Mille Stoffregen and 1-3 (11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 10-12) against Hannah Silcock (Jersey).
In the men's competition, Robert Istrate finished third in Group 1, after defeating Croatian Borna Petek 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-7), and losing 1-3 (5-11, 8-11, 13-11, 5-11) to Poland's Mateusz Zalewski and 2-3 (11-7, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 9-11) to Sweden's Isak Alfredsson.
Top seed Iulian Chirita, fourth seed Darius Movileanu and sixth seed Andrei Istrate advanced straight to the second stage of the groups in the men's singles.
At the 2025 edition, team Romania won eight medals (2-2-4).
