A possible suspension of Romanian air navigation service provider ROMATSA would create a major national security vulnerability, disrupt NATO operations on the Alliance's Eastern Flank and isolate Romania geopolitically, the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) warned on Monday.

"The possible suspension of ROMATSA's activity would generate a major systemic vulnerability to national security by immediately degrading the surveillance of the integrated airspace and disrupting NATO's tactical and logistical missions on the Eastern Flank. The Court of Appeal's ruling is neither final nor enforceable," the Presidential Administration said in a press release issued after the council's meeting.

Such an operational disruption would force the rerouting of critical European air transit corridors in the context of the conflicts in the EU's eastern neighbourhood, seriously undermining Romania's credibility as a regional security provider in relation to EUROCONTROL, the press release said.

"Domestically, a disruption to air traffic management would affect commercial, cargo and emergency transport infrastructure, causing significant economic losses and disrupting strategic supply chains. In this context, the Council instructed the Romanian government, through the competent public authorities, to take the necessary measures to identify solutions for ensuring the continued provision of air navigation services and the security of the country's airspace," the Presidential Administration said in the press release.

In February 2026, the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered the 30-day suspension of ROMATSA's air navigation service provider certificate following a lawsuit filed by 12 air traffic controllers alleging discrimination in the company's recruitment procedures. The ruling is subject to appeal and has not entered into force.
