The philatelic issue "Rotary, Romania District, 90 years", consisting of a postage stamp and a first-day cover, will be put into circulation starting Friday by Romfilatelia and the Romanian Post.
According to a Romfilatelia press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, the first-day cover features a diagram of Rotary International's areas of focus, also adopted by Rotary International District 2241 Romania and the Republic of Moldova: promoting peace and preventing conflict; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; community economic development; and environmental protection.
The issue will be available from Friday, 20 March, in Romfilatelia shops in Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara, as well as online.
In 1905, American lawyer Paul Percy Harris, together with three friends, founded a Rotary club in Chicago, a non-profit organisation bringing together professionals and leaders from various fields to carry out community service, promote ethics and contribute to peace and the well-being of the communities in which they operate.
In 1929, the first Rotary club was established in Romania, and on 1 March 1936 District 84 Romania was founded, comprising nine clubs - Bucharest, Timisoara, Brasov, Cernauti, Arad, Campina, Iasi, Cluj and Ploiesti - with engineer Christian Penescu Kertsch as governor. He was also the founding president of the first club, the one in Bucharest (featured on the postage stamp with a nominal value of 16 lei).
During the communist period, the Rotary movement was banned in Romania and was re-established in 1992 with the founding of the Rotary Club Bucharest.
Today, Rotary International District 2241 Romania and the Republic of Moldova is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organisation dedicated to community service, bringing together people who act to create change in the world, in their communities and within themselves, generating lasting impact wherever they are involved.
