The Academy of Romanian Scientists (AOSR) on Thursday marked the National Culture Day, celebrated annually on January 15, with a symposium titled "Literature and Painting, Elements of A Spiritual Civilisation".

"The Academy of Romanian Scientists celebrated January 15 - national poet Mihai Eminescu's birthday and the National Culture Day - according to its vision and academic mission of approaching culture's role in shaping national identity and developing the Romanian civilisation in the context of the European and global diversity," reads a press release of the institution sent to AGERPRES.

Participating in the event were members of the diplomatic corps, writers, artists, researchers, representatives of public institutions. The FILDAS ART and the EXPO ARTE Cultural Centre (Bucharest City Hall) were partners of the event.

The symposium debated on the essential role of culture in the development of the Romanian civilisation, while focusing two of the greatest internationally known Romanian personalities, poet Mihai Eminescu and painter Nicolae Grigorescu.

The president of the Academy, Doina Banciu, spoke about the importance of culture for the AOSR, as culture in its many manifestations has always been part of the Academy's activity, from classical music to contemporary music and a large range of specific cultural manifestations (literature, music, painting, sculpture, theatre, cinema etc.), reads the abovementioned press release.

At the end of the symposium, actress Gabriela Enescu held a recital from Eminescu's work.
