The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) prosecutors and judicial police officers carried out 9 house searches on Tuesday in the counties of Valcea, Sibiu and Gorj, as part of an action to dismantle a group made up of Romanians and Sri Lankans, which trafficked Asian workers to Western Europe.
According to DIICOT, the group operated both before Romania's accession to the Schengen Area and afterwards, on several levels, namely the recruitment and transportation of migrants of Asian origin (especially Sri Lankan) in Romania on work visas and their preparation to be loaded onto means of transportation for fraudulent border crossing to Western Europe.
For each migrant, the group charged between 2,000 and 5,000 EUR, the sums acquired being divided by the smugglers, depending on the position held in the group's hierarchy and the degree of involvement in the criminal activity.
The hearings will take place at the headquarters of DIICOT - Central Structure.
The action benefited from the support of police officers from ITPF Oradea - Varsand Border Police Sector, the Services for Combating Organized Crime Valcea, Sibiu and Gorj and gendarmes from the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Gendarmerie.
