Strengthening the Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership and cooperation in the areas of security, economy and regional resilience were the main subjects discussed at the meetings of the Chairman of the Romanian Senate, Mircea Abrudean, on a recent official visit to the U.S.
The visit, which took place February 3 to 6, included taking part in the Parliamentary Intelligence Security Forum organised in Washington D.C., as well as meetings with senior U.S. officials.
"Discussions focused on strengthening the Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership and on cooperation in the areas of security, economy and regional resilience. The preparation of the visit included a meeting with the President of Romania, during which parts of the strategic alignment were discussed on the subjects addressed during the official visit," according to the Romanian Senate.
Abrudean reaffirmed at the Interparliamentary Security Forum Romania's firm commitment to collective defence within NATO, Romania's strategic role on the eastern flank of the Alliance and its contribution to regional security.
He met the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who reconfirmed the solid level of Romanian-American relations and the importance of parliamentary dialogue in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
"The strategic partnership with the U.S. is a central pillar in Romania's defence strategy. It is the foundation on which we are building to have measurable results not only in securing the borders and protecting NATO's eastern flank, but also in the economy, energy and innovative technologies," Abrudean said at the meeting.
The agenda of the visit also included a meeting with Riley M. Barnes, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. Department of State, with the discussions highlighting Romanian-American cooperation in promoting the rule of law, institutional transparency, freedom of the press and combatting disinformation amidst the security challenges on NATO's eastern flank.
Abrudean also met Senator Mike Rounds, member of the United States Senate Armed Services Committee.
He also had a conversation with the Vice President for Energy and Infrastructure of the Atlantic Council, Landon Derentz, on the joint Romania-US projects that contribute to strengthening resilience and the Strategic Partnership.
The visit also included a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., a moment of deep symbolic significance, which reconfirmed Romania's commitment to promoting historicalremembrance, combatting anti-Semitism and defending democratic values.
At the 74th National Prayer Breakfast, an important event attended by US President Donald Trump, numerous members of the United States Congress and representatives from over 100 countries, Abrudean met with the Chairman of the Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk.
"I concluded my visit to the U.S. today and it is very clear that our strategic partnership is an important and solid pillar. High-level meetings with Speaker Mike Johnson, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and U.S. State Department Deputy Secretary of State Riley Barnes, as well as other high-level meetings, have confirmed that Romania matters and is a reliable ally," Abrudean said in a social media post.
