Senate: Citizens' initiative on redefinition of family adopted in plenum; referendum on October 7

The legislative proposal on revising Constitution where it stipulates that family means consensual marriage between a man and a woman was adopted on Tuesday by the plenary sitting of the Senate.

The citizens' initiative, which needed to be supported by at least two thirds of the Senators was adopted through nominal vote, with 107 votes cast "in favour", 13 "against" and 7 abstentions. 

According to the modification proposed by the means of the article 48 of the Constitution: "Family means consensual marriage between a man and a woman, which are equal, and the rights and obligations of the parents to raise, educate and instruct their children."

On September 1, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader, Liviu Dragnea, announced that the referendum on family will take place on October 7.
