Senator Cristian-Augustin Niculescu-Tagarlas initiated a motion within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to strengthen international cooperation in combating human trafficking.
According to a Senate press release sent on Thursday, the motion by Cristian-Augustin Niculescu-Tagarlas, member of Romania's parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), is entitled "Need for an enhanced international cooperation on combating human trafficking" and is "in the process of being signed and supported by the members of the Assembly".
The document emphasizes the need for coordinated action between the states of origin and destination of victims of human trafficking, in order to strengthen criminal liability and international cooperation in preventing and combating this serious phenomenon.
"Human trafficking remains one of the most cynical forms of modern slavery, a direct attack on human dignity and fundamental European values. It is our duty, as legislators, to strengthen international cooperation instruments and demand a real commitment from all member states to identify, protect and support victims," said Senator Cristian-Augustin Niculescu-Tagarlas, quoted in the press release.
The initiative was launched in the context of the high-level conference organized in Warsaw, on September 18, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the opening for signature of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings - one of the most important legal instruments in the field.
Through this initiative, Romania reaffirms its active role in promoting human rights and international justice, in the spirit of the values of the Council of Europe and European solidarity in the face of cross-border crimes, the press release states.
