Senate President Florin Citu announced on Wednesday that 600 people will be hired back in the coal mining industry, which will help bolster Romania's energy resources by 300 MW.
"Yesterday there was a longer discussion on energy. The Prime Minister met last night with representatives of the Muntenia and the Hunedoara energy complexes in a bid to restart these coal-fired capacities. It's clear that in this complicated situation, the entire Europe is looking at alternative energy sources and Romania already has them. We'll see if we also must import coal. 300 MW will be added to the system. This means that we will have to hire back about 600 workers in the mining sector, which is good news for these people who have suffered," Citu said at the Senate.
He mentioned that the option of starting the exploitation of the Rosia Montana site should also be considered.
"The restart will be only for this situation, we'll see how long it lasts. If Europe returns to coal mining, we should also look at the Rosia Montana project. After all, we have resources there too that can be used in the interest of Romania and we should ponder on the conditions under which we could start the exploitation there as well," said the Liberal leader.
All the parties in the governing coalition support the fast-track passage of the offshore bill, Florin Citu also said today, mentioning that there are already companies that will proceed to extracting natural gas from the Black Sea and will put it on the market as soon as the regulatory act is approved.
"We will have the offshore law in place, we are very close to that. Yesterday I asked the Energy Ministry for some more variant simulations, but we are very close to issuing the offshore law. You realize that in the current context all the coalition's political forces want the offshore bill to be promptly approved. The moment it gets to Parliament, I guarantee you that it will pass very quickly, in an emergency procedure. The act is necessary because there are already companies that will extract gas and put it on the market right the day after the law is approved," Citu said. AGERPRES
