Seven people have been remanded in custody for 30 days and another has been placed under judicial control for 60 days on charges of drug trafficking, spokeswoman for the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate (IPJ) Elena Welter announced on Friday.
"Seven people were placed under preventive arrest for a period of 30 days, and one person was placed under judicial control for a period of 60 days. Investigations in this case are continuing," Elena Welter said.
According to IPJ Sibiu, police officers and Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) prosecutors carried out 12 searches on Thursday, in Sibiu and Alba counties, on people suspected of trafficking in risk and high-risk drugs, 42 witnesses were heard and eight people were detained.
"On 5 July this year, police officers of the Sibiu Organised Crime Service, together with prosecutors of the D.I.I.C.O.T. - Sibiu Territorial Office, carried out 12 house searches, in Sibiu and Alba counties, on persons suspected of trafficking in risk and high-risk drugs and carrying out, without right, operations with products likely to have psychoactive effects. Investigations revealed that, from 2021 until now, the suspects have repeatedly sold risk and high-risk drugs and substances with psychoactive effects to consumers, including minors. In addition to the suspects, 42 people were taken to the D.I.I.C.O.T. - Sibiu Territorial Office, as well as to the Sibiu Organised Crime Service, for hearings as witnesses," Elena Welter said on Thursday.
Following the searches, the police discovered and seized "several envelopes with crystallized substance, portioned for sale, containers containing cannabis and hashish, precision electronic scales, mobile phones and other computer systems, likely to have been used in criminal activity, 595 euros and 14,415 lei, and other evidence. As a result of the evidence administered in the case, so far, 8 people, 6 men and 2 women, aged between 20 and 35 years, all from Sibiu county, have received 24 hour remand orders," reads a press release from the IPJ Sibiu.
