Sibiu mountain rescuers warn tourists not to travel to Balea Lac or to higher altitudes, in the Fagaras Mountains, on mountain hikes and in no case without adequate equipment, after "several avalanches of considerable size" took place here, said Agerpres.

One of these avalanches took place on the night of Thursday to Friday and is considered one of the largest in this area in the last five years, according to messages posted on Facebook by the "Avalanche in Carpathians" Association.

"A large avalanche flowed naturally during the night from Thursday to Friday due to significant wind accumulations. It flowed practically the entire crown below Balcoane, from under the boulder east of Paltinu peak, to Hornul Negru, after Steag. (...) The accumulation area, above the lake in the area of the ice falls to under the Balea ridge, near the old Salvamont refuge. This is one of the largest avalanches recorded in the Balea area in the last 5 years," Adrian Valean, from "Avalanche in Carpathians", said in the post.

Salvamont Sibiu also posted a warning to tourists on Facebook on Friday evening. "As a result of the snowfall and wind in recent days, in the Fagaras Mountains, at altitudes of over 1,800 m, wind sheets of significant size have formed. Also, several spontaneous avalanches of considerable size have occurred. We do not recommend traveling to the high area without experience in such conditions and of course without adequate equipment," announced Salvamont Sibiu.

The highest snow layer measured by meteorologists in Sibiu County is 110 centimeters, in the Balea Lac tourist area, located at over 2,000 meters altitude in the Fagaras Mountains, where there is a high risk of avalanches, according to the website of the National Meteorological Administration.

At Balea Lac, snowdrifts can reach two meters.

The opening hours of the Balea Cable Car is from Monday to Sunday, between 09:00 - 17:00. A round trip with the Balea cable car costs 160 lei for an adult. The cable car operates with a minimum of 10 people, according to the website https://balealac.ro/telecabina/.
