Tennis player Simona Halep said on Wednesday that it's an honor for Romania's Fed Cup team to have the best Romanian tennis player of all time Ilie Nastase serving as non-playing captain. Asked about her opinion on a statement by fellow player Sorana Cirstea, who said that Ilie Nastase's appointment in lieu of Alina Tecsor to the position of non-playing captain is ''weird'' and ''suspect'', Simona Halep replied that she is not familiar with the subject.
''I don't know, for me it's an honor to have Mr Ilie Nastase as captain. I'm sure we'll be filled with emotion, because he is who he is, he's been the world's No. 1, the best Romanian player ... It will be a great experience and I say it again, I am honored to have him as captain,'' said Halep.
Simona Halep mentioned that she is pleased that Romania's next game in the first round of the Fed Cup World Group II, the one with Belgium, scheduled for February 11 - 12, will take place in Bucharest. "I'm pleased that it's played in Bucharest because I'll be staying home,'' said Halep who visited on Wednesday a private clinic in Bucharest. The Romanian Tennis Federation appointed on October 20 Ilie Nastase as captain of the women's team playing in the Fed Cup, in a move intended to concentrate all the values of Romanian tennis around this lineup, the Federation said in a release.
