Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea has qualified for the second round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), which offers total prize money of 4,088,211 US dollars, after defeating Belarusian Aleksandra Sasnovich, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).
Cirstea (35, world No. 32) prevailed after one hour and 47 minutes in her first-ever meeting with Sasnovich (31, world No. 113).
Cirstea has won a cheque worth 26,000 US dollars and 65 WTA ranking points, and in the second round she will face Czech player Linda Noskova (21, world No. 14), the 10th seed, who defeated her in 2024, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in the second round in Brisbane.
Jaqueline Cristian (27, world No. 39) had been due to play Canadian Victoria Mboko (19, world No. 10), the 11th seed, in the first round on Monday, but the latter withdrew due to a right elbow injury. The Romanian's opponent will instead be Croatia's Petra Marcinko, a lucky loser (20, world No. 69).
