Speaker of Romania's Chamber of Deputies Sorin Grindeanu, said on Monday, after meeting an Australian parliamentary delegation led by Milton Dick, Speaker of Australia's House of Representatives, that Romania wants Australia's support for joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as the development of political relations between the legislative forums of the two countries.

"Today's visit of the Australian parliamentary delegation, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick, was a new opportunity to promote Romania's interests internationally! We are interested in Australia continuing to support Romania's accession to the OECD, but also in expanding the political relations between the legislative forums of our nations. On his visit, Milton Dick said that he wants to set up a parliamentary friendship group with Romania, at the level of the Australian House of Representatives," Grindeanu wrote in a social media post.

Grindeanu also said that he presented Romania's business opportunities, insisting on the strategic importance of the Port of Constanta in the regional context generated by the war in Ukraine.

"Australian companies can benefit from the operational capacity of the port and also from the naval connections with other states in the European Union that the Danube offers. In the context of today's visit, I also told the Australian delegation that Romania encourages collaboration in the field of energy production (including energy from renewable sources), and also in the field of the defence industry. Today's visit was also of particular importance from the perspective of the level of representation. It is basically the meeting at the highest level in the last 10 years between the representatives of the parliaments of the two countries. The previous visit at this level took place in 2006, when the then Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament met in Canberra his Australian counterpart, at his invitation," Grindeanu said.
