The animals at the zoo located within the Constantin Stere Memorial Park in Bucov, Prahova County, are benefiting during this period of extremely low temperatures from special measures, including heated shelters and diets adapted to weather conditions.
Bucov Park Deputy Director Alina Ene told AGERPRES on Tuesday that birds are the most sensitive at this time.
'At the moment, birds are the most sensitive. There are the parrots, which do not stay outside, there are the ducks, which do stay outside but it is quite cold and they go back into their shelters, the black swans go out for walks but then return to their shelters. We also have two black swan chicks for whom this is their first winter,' Alina Ene said.
To help the animals get through the frosty period more easily, the amount of straw has been increased and some shelters are heated by boilers.
'The amount of straw has been increased and otherwise, in the shelters, we have boilers. And where there are no boilers, for the tigers, the lion cubs, we have two born in March last year, and for the jaguar, we have warm air ventilation. (...) The adult lions have had underfloor heating, for about three or four years now. The lemurs are coping well, they huddle together but indoors, they do not go outside. They all stay cuddled up. (...) The bears have not come out at all, they have gone into hibernation, unlike last year when they came out daily for food, but now, for almost two weeks, they have not come out at all. (...) The camels stay inside and do not go out at all. The llamas go out from time to time. But the fallow deer and the Carpathian deer are outside. The Cameroon sheep also go out, the wild boars are all outside and have no problem at all. Otherwise, most of them go in and out, and if they do not want to go out, the keepers go in and take them out because they need a bit of walking, a bit of movement, to protect their joints,' Alina Ene explained.
According to her, the Siberian tigers and the yaks are the happiest during this extremely cold period.
The animals are now receiving more protein, as well as warm water and tea.
'We have increased their protein intake, added a lot of eggs and we give them warm water and tea. Especially tea for the monkeys. They drink tea, they like tea, especially forest fruit tea. They even have preferences, can you imagine?,' the deputy director of Bucov Park added.
The Ploiesti-Bucov Zoo is home to around 600 animals from 60 species.
