A state-of-the-art robotic system, a system of minimally invasive robot-assisted tumor ablation, will reach the Regional Institute of Oncology (IRO) this month, through a project implemented by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) Grigore T. Popa in northeastern Iasi City.

According to the rector of UMF Iasi, Viorel Scripcariu, the value of this equipment amounts to over 22.5 million lei (over 4.55 million euros).

The robot was purchased within the CENEMED research project - Multidisciplinary platform for medical research and development in the N-E region, co-financed by the Competitiveness Operational Program, Priority Axis: Research, Technological Development and Innovation (RDI), within which a research center will be developed in the fields of cardiovascular and toxicological emergencies, pelvic oncology, immunology and genetics, nephropathology and gastroenterohepatology.

"It is a state-of-the-art technology, a minimally invasive robot-assisted tumor ablation system and an additional console, both worth over 22.5 million lei. It is a fantastic progress for the quality of the surgical act in the region of Moldavia, our patients being able to benefit from the most advanced type of minimally invasive surgery in the world - robotic surgery," said Viorel Scripcariu.

CENEMED is a unique project in Romania, the general objective of which is to increase the capacity of research and development and knowledge transfer of UMF Grigore T. Popa Iasi by creating a multidisciplinary research center in the fields of cardiovascular and toxicological emergencies, pelvic oncology, immunology and genetics, nephropathology and gastroenterohepatology, in order to research diagnostic methods and personalized therapeutic means for pathology in the area of interest capable of increasing survival and improving the quality of life of the patients in the North-East region.

The project started on September 14, 2021 and will be completed on December 31, 2023, Agerpres informs.
