The Students' Organisation of the Babes-Bolyai University (OSUBB) in Cluj-Napoca has announced a series of protests beginning on February 25 against the increase in tuition fees.
'The Students' Organisation of the Babes-Bolyai University (OSUBB), together with other student organisations, announces the launch of a protest on Wednesday, 25 February, in front of the Rectorate of Babes-Bolyai University. This action represents a continuation of the public stance adopted by student organisations online and throughout all previous consultation stages. From the moment the decision to increase tuition fees was announced, they took part in meetings with the university leadership, formally expressed their disagreement with the proposed increases, and consistently presented the impact these rises would have on access to higher education. However, the arguments put forward were not reflected in the final decision of February 16, when the Senate of Babes-Bolyai University adopted the largest increase in tuition fees in recent years,' OSUBB said in a press release issued on Thursday, agerpres reports.
According to the same source, in the case of certain degree programmes, the approved increases amount to as much as 3,500 lei, representing rises of nearly 120% compared with the current level.
'For thousands of young people, this difference constitutes a financial burden that may make the difference between continuing their studies and dropping out of university,' the press release further notes.
On Wednesday, the student organisations submitted a formal request to the University Senate seeking both a reconsideration of the decision to increase tuition fees, adopted at the Senate meeting, and an increase in the scholarship fund so as to cover both the number and the value of scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.
