'Superangular Sibiu' - preamble to National Day, unique exhibition with Agerpres photos

For the first time in recent years, the National News Agency is present in Sibiu with images from its archive about the first Romanian city that was European Cultural Capital, in a unique exhibition, ''Superangular Sibiu", which brings together images throughout 160 years, taken both by AGERPRES photographers and by famous names who made history, such as Alexander Maierhofer, Theodor Glatz, Kamilla Ásbóth, Gustav Albert Schivert, August Meinhardt, Rudolf Czeck, Wilhelm Auerlich, Emil Fischer.

The exhibition ''Superangular Sibiu" was opened on Wednesday, in the new headquarters of the ASTRA County Library in Sibiu, in an "emblematic building for Sibiu", being characterized by the interim manager of the Brukenthal National Museum, Alexandru Chituta, as "a unique event, a preamble to the National Day of Romania".

The general director of AGERPRES, Claudia Nicolae, emphasized on the occasion of the opening that the National News Agency has the richest and most valuable photo archive in the country and especially after the pandemic, where images of the agency are presented, the public becomes nostalgic and feels the longing to revisit moments or places thought to have been forgotten.

"AGERPRES is not only the national news agency. The pieces of news, throughout time, in all 133 years, have been accompanied by photographs, and the photographs, part of them, stand here as proof today. The archival fund that AGERPRES has is extremely rich. (...) We tried to bring today, here, images from the old Sibiu. We went to around 1988. (...) In other cities, when I was watching the viewers of a press photography exhibition, I carefully noticed the emotion on their faces when they saw places, buildings that no longer exist. This is what we are trying to do with this kind of exhibition, to bring to the attention of those who are nostalgic, and after the pandemic, we noticed a lot of nostalgia in the eyes of everyone. We miss certain moments, we miss certain places, and this is ultimately part of us and our soul. This is what we, at AGERPRES, are trying to preserve, to preserve the tradition, to preserve the culture and through this, in the future to educate the new readers as well and the new generations," Claudia Nicolae declared at the opening.

''Superangular Sibiu" is an exhibition that presents both images from the AGERPRES archive and old photographs, taken by photographic artists, pioneers of this art.

"The pioneers of photography and the first photographers were actually painters who left their brushes and switched to photography. (...) We are bringing to the public's attention the 160 years since photography has existed in Sibiu", emphasized the deputy general director of Cotroceni National Museum, Sorin Margarit.

The exhibition about Sibiu is made, in partnership, by the ASTRA County Library in Sibiu, where the images are presented, the Cotroceni National Museum, AGERPRES and the Brukenthal National Museum.

This exhibition presents, for example, photos taken by the first workshop woman photographer from Transylvania, Kamilla Asboth, according to Constantin Chituta.

Passionate about photography and professor of history at the Sibiu University, the manager of the ASTRA County Library in Sibiu, Razvan Pop, highlighted the fact that this exhibition, compared to others, presents books about photography, but also cameras. One of Razvan Pop's wishes is for a street in Sibiu to be named after a local photographer who made the city famous.

Most of those who came to the opening, journalists and not only, were attracted by an AGERPRES photo of Sibiu's Big Square, which looked completely different during communism, compared to how it looks today.

The exhibition ''Superangular Sibiu" is open to the public in the foyer of the ASTRA Sibiu Library (no 7 George Baritiu Street, Building B), until December 4, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
