Table Tennis: Bernadette Szocs reaches round of 16 at World Championships

Romanian tennis player Bernadette Szocs, world number 14, qualified for the round of 16 of the women's singles event, on Tuesday, at the World Individual Table Tennis Championships in Doha (Qatar), after defeating Taiwan's Yu-Jhun Li, 4-1 (11-9, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7), according to the FRTM website.

Andreea Dragoman, world number 132, produced a big surprise in the second round, with a successful victory over the European champion, Austrian Sofia Polcanova, 4-2 (5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 13-11, 8-11, 11-8). In the round of 32, Dragoman will face French Prithika Pavade.

Both Romanian men's singles players lost in the round of 32. Iulian Chirita lost to Englishman Tom Jarvis, 0-4 (9-11, 12-14, 10-12, 7-11), and Eduard Ionescu lost to Slovenian Darko Jorgic, 0-4 (9-11, 7-11, 2-11, 6-11).

In women's doubles, Adina Diaconu and Spanish Maria Xiao qualified for the quarterfinals, after 3-0 (13-11, 11-4, 12-10) against the pair Wing Lam Ng/Chengzhu Zhu (Hong Kong). In the round of 16, Bernadette Szocs and Sofia Polcanova will play against the pair Hana Matelova (Czech Republic)/Barbora Balazova (Slovakia).

In the men's doubles event, Ovidiu Ionescu and Spaniard Alvaro Robles, bronze medalists at the 2019 World Championships, will play in the round of 16 against the Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto/Sora Matsushima. AGERPRES
