The strengthening of the Strategic Partnership and regional security were key topics during the discussions in Bucharest between UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty, Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu, and State Secretary Clara Staicu, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced.

"Minister of State for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Stephen Doughty paid a visit to Bucharest on Wednesday, 29 October, for the Romanian-British Kingdom Strategic Dialogue, held under the Joint Declaration on the implementation of the bilateral Strategic Partnership signed in 2023. The programme included a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu and consultations within the Strategic Dialogue with State Secretary for European Affairs, the Middle East and Africa, Clara Staicu," the MAE said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the meeting between Oana Toiu and Stephen Doughty provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening the Romania-UK Strategic Partnership and identifying opportunities for further deepening cooperation.

"The United Kingdom is one of Romania's most valuable strategic partners, and our discussion confirmed this. Regional security was a major topic, and we share the same vision for peace and security, as well as a strong joint commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, which is particularly reflected in the UK's participation, through NATO, in missions on Romanian territory," Minister Oana Toiu was quoted as saying in the release.

She also expressed interest in enhancing economic cooperation by supporting business communities and entrepreneurs from both countries, including Romanian companies that decide to enter the UK market.

Oana Toiu highlighted the importance of the Romanian community in the United Kingdom for the overall bilateral relationship, noting that it creates significant opportunities, particularly in the economic, cultural and academic fields.

"The Strategic Dialogue meeting between the British official and State Secretary Clara Staicu provided a framework for an in-depth analysis of bilateral cooperation in the areas covered by the 2023 Joint Declaration, including steps to strengthen cooperation in the economic, investment, security and defence fields, as well as in countering hybrid threats and disinformation, and promoting people-to-people ties. Discussions also focused on EU-UK relations, cooperation within NATO, the regional and European security situation, the war in Ukraine and its impact on countries in the region, including the Republic of Moldova," further reads the release.

According to the same source, State Secretary Clara Staicu and Minister Stephen Doughty underlined the importance of maintaining the momentum in bilateral contacts and cooperation in the coming period, to fully capitalise on the opportunities provided by the strategic level of the bilateral relationship.
