The tax on parcels coming from outside the European Union established by the Ministry of Finance is a logistics tax, it protects 50-60,000 Romanian entrepreneurs and a way of harmonizing it with the tax that will be imposed at EU level will be analyzed, the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare declared on Thursday.
He answered that when asked at a press conference at the Victoria Palace what will happen to the tax on parcels coming from outside the European Union from July 1, the date on which such a tax is to be established at EU level, which will be mandatory for all member states.
"The tax we introduced is a logistics tax. This decision was recently made in ECOFIN [Economic and Financial Affairs Council]. We will make a decision, I would not like to answer you on this topic today, because I have not discussed it with anyone in the coalition, not even with the prime minister. We will evaluate the options and make an announcement in this regard. In any case, this logistics tax protects 50-60 thousand Romanian entrepreneurs who saw a significant decrease in turnover, who were selling online and who suffered enormously due to the invasion of small packages from third countries. We have not made a decision on what we will do next, how we will harmonize the two taxes", declared Alexandru Nazare.
At the ECOFIN meeting on December 12, organized in Brussels, Romania, through the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, supported the proposals for transitional solutions for the elimination of the de minimis customs threshold (150 euros), given the urgent need to correct the imbalances generated by massive online imports of parcels with a value below 150 euros. In this regard, a customs duty of 3 euros per product in parcels below this value was established, starting with July 1, 2026.
