Ten universities and specialised companies in Romania are managing a portfolio of 20 microelectronics sub-projects to be implemented by the end of 2028, the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism (MEDAT) announced on Monday in a Facebook post.

"Technological efficiency is not only the result of individual efforts, but of a collaborative public-private ecosystem. Ten indirect participants are making a decisive contribution to strengthening microelectronics in Romania, by developing innovative solutions for the European value chain," the post reads.

The sub-projects will be implemented by the University of Craiova, Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava and 1 Decembrie 1918 University of Alba Iulia - one sub-project each; Babes-Bolyai University and Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi - two each; Politehnica University of Timisoara and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca - three each; and the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest - four sub-projects.

In addition, microelectronics sub-projects will also be implemented by the companies Fotonation S.R.L. - two sub-projects - and Wyliodrin S.R.L. - one.

The first meeting to launch the sub-projects contracted under Call 1 and Call 2 took place in January at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, with the participation of representatives from MEDAT and the Ministry of Investments and European Projects (MIPE).

MEDAT, in cooperation with MIPE, is managing the Project of European Interest in the field of microelectronics and communication technologies (IPCEI ME/CT), a strategic investment vital to Romania's technological future, financed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The budget allocated to Call 1 amounts to EUR 224.8 million, of which EUR 204.37 million represents non-repayable funding from the NRRP. The budget allocated to Call 2 totals EUR 44.4 million, of which EUR 44 million represents non-repayable NRRP funding.
