Romanian tennis player Irina Begu, main seed, qualified on Wednesday for the quarterfinals of the women's singles event at the 100,000-USD grass court ITF tournament in Southsea (UK), after defeating Chinese Xinyun Han, with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Begu (aged 26, WTA's 69th) managed to defeat her 27-year-old opponent, who is ranked 120th in the WTA, in one hour and 55 minutes. Begu succeeded 8 aces and made 4 double errors, compared to 6 of the Chinese player.
Irina had defeated Xinyun Han in 2013, in the first round of the WTA tournament in Seul, with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals of this tournament with a main draw made up of only 16 players in women's singles, Begu will face off German Andrea Petkovic (aged 29, WTA's 88th). Petkovic has 2-0 in head-to-head meet. She won in 2014, in the second round in Wimbledon, with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and this year in the first round in Saint Petersburg, with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
Begu and Raluca Olaru pair up in doubles, where they are 2nd seeded, and in the quarterfinals (first round) they will play against the pairing made up of Viktorija Golubic (Switzerland )/Lyudmyla Kichenok (Ukraine).
