The two young Ukrainians who crossed the border into Romania through the Maramuresului Mountains and became stranded in a difficult area have been found by rescuers, the director of the Maramures County Public Mountain Rescue Service (Salvamont), Dan Benga, informed on Thursday evening.
'Just moments ago, the two Ukrainians were found by mountain rescuers and the Border Police. They are alive, but they are wet, and their clothes are frozen up to the waist. They are moving extremely slowly (...) They are being given hot tea and protein bars provided by the Red Cross,' said Dan Benga, on Thursday evening.
The rescue operation was supported by a team from the Border Police Sector in the rural town Poienile de sub Munte, a locality on the border with Ukraine.
The two young Ukrainians requested assistance from the Romanian authorities by calling the emergency number 112.
'The young men became trapped in an inaccessible area from which they can no longer descend on their own (...) They reported suffering from extreme cold, having no supplies, and having completely lost their sense of direction. The teams are making superhuman efforts to locate them in time and bring them safely back to base,' the director of Salvamont Maramures had previously stated.
He also noted that in some areas the snow exceeds two metres, and that during the night the perceived temperature will drop to between minus 15 and minus 17 degrees Celsius.
