Three Sri Lankan citizens hidden in cardboard boxes, found in truck at western border

Three citizens from Sri Lanka were caught by the Arad border police while trying to leave the country hidden in cardboard boxes transported in a truck, the Romanian driver being investigated for migrant smuggling.

The driver is 19 years old and was checked at the Nadlac II Border Crossing Point, while driving a truck registered in our country in which, according to the documents accompanying the goods, cardboard boxes were being transported on the Romania-Hungary route.

"Based on the risk profile, a detailed control of the means of transport was carried out, as a result of which the border police discovered, in the compartment intended for the transport of goods, in the cardboard boxes being transported, three foreign citizens. The persons in question were led at the headquarters of the border police sector for investigations. During the checks, our colleagues established that they are citizens from Sri Lanka, between the ages of 31 and 40, who entered Romania legally," the Arad Border Police informed on Tuesday.

The driver is under criminal investigation for migrant smuggling and the foreigners are under investigation for attempting to fraudulently cross the state border.
