Senator Titus Corlatean has been elected as a representative to the Venice Commission on behalf of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
According to a press release sent by the Senate on Tuesday, the decision was made during the first part of the Ordinary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, held in Strasbourg from 26 to 30 January, on the basis of an agreement among the five political groups represented within the Assembly.
"The Venice Commission is the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters, which develops and disseminates the constitutional and legal experience of member states, thus contributing to the consolidation of a common constitutional heritage. This structure was established on the basis of an enlarged agreement of the Council of Europe, bringing together the organisation's 46 member states in Strasbourg and a further 15 countries that share the same fundamental values," the release said.
Senator Corlatean's mandate as representative of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights to the Commission for Democracy through Law is to be exercised throughout this year, with the possibility of renewal for a further year.
