Director of the Bucharest Blood Transfusion Centre Doina Gosa told Agerpres on Wednesday that as a result of last week's campaign, the city's blood stock was replenished, but she called on the Bucharesters to keep donating in order to avoid relapsing to a crisis. Because of the heatwave, the number of donors was lower, the blood stock dropped and only the emergency could be ensured, which is why the Bucharest City Hall started the campaign "A Drop of Blood can save a life!"
"As a result of last week's campaign, when I sent the population the message that blood stock levels had dropped, people responded in great numbers, and I thank them for that. They came on August 14 as well, when we filled 190 blood bags, which is a very good day for a short public holiday, and today I have had a large number of donors. But my message is that we need people to donate every day because the patients need blood every day. We were able to meet the demand, we had no problems during the short holiday, and we provided the local hospitals with blood. It is also true that most of the doctors were on vacation and postponed their surgeries (...) We should take in 350-400 bags of blood a day, but on good days we harvest 250. Last week, as a result of the campaign, we harvested even 300 blood bags per day, which was good. (...) We managed to replenish the city's blood stock, but donors are still invited to please keep on donating so as to avoid relapsing to a crisis," Gosa said.
In addition to the current incentives, blood donors could receive meal vouchers worth 150 lei each, Bucharest General Mayor Gabriela Firea announced last week. The Romanian Patriarchate last week called on the clergy and believers of the Romanian Christian Orthodox Church (BOR) for blood donation, responding to a signal from several medical facilities and transfusion centres in the country about decreasing numbers of donors during this period.
