A group of 12 citizens from Syria and Afghanistan were detained by the border police in the Zimnicea area, for fraudulent border crossing, after they crossed the Danube in two motor boats and were boarded in a van, the General Inspectorate of the Border Police (IGPF) informed on Monday, informs Agerpres.
They were 11 Syrian citizens and one Afghan citizen and they were handed over to the Bulgarian border authorities according to the readmission agreement concluded between Romania and Bulgaria.
Migrants were observed crossing the Danube in motorboats, in the evening of September 17, during joint actions carried out in the area of the Zimnicea border sector by the policemen of the Teleorman and Giurgiu Territorial Border Police Services.
"Thus, at around 11.00 pm, the border police noticed two motorboats carrying several people crossing the Danube river. After reaching the shore, the people were loaded into a van. At around 00.25 am, our colleagues intercepted and detained the group of people and the driver of the van, who was a Romanian citizen, and led them to the headquarters of the Territorial Service of the Teleorman Border Police, in order to continue the investigations," stated the same source.
The van driver is being investigated for migrant trafficking, and the foreign citizens are being investigated for fraudulently crossing the state border.
