The team of students from the "Gh Asachi" Technical University of Iasi (TUIASI) won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the 19th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad "South Eastern European Mathematical Olympiad for University Students - SEEMOUS 2025".

According to a press release sent to the press on Thursday, the two silver medals were won by Mihai Bandur and Daniel Hanganu, and the bronze medals were awarded to Cosette-Ioana Lupu and Matei Mardare, all four students at the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers.

The competition took place in Korce, Albania, under the patronage of the Mathematical Society of South Eastern Europe - MASSEE and the Albanian Society of Mathematical Sciences.

The Olympiad was attended by 111 students from 27 universities in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania and Turkmenistan.

"The subjects were very difficult, but they were also beautiful. The students had the opportunity to get in touch with Albanian history and culture, visiting museums and admiring the beauty of Lake Ohrid. We realized that there are some interesting connections between our cultures. For example, the melody of the national anthem of Albania is composed by Ciprian Porumbescu. Or the fact that Vasile Lupu, the founder of the 'Three Hierarchs' monastery, was of Albanian origin", declared Marcel Roman, director of the Department of Mathematics at TUIASI.

This is not the first participation of Iasi students in this competition. Since the first edition, Iasi polytechnic students have returned home with gold, silver or bronze medals. To achieve such performances, students prepare within the Center for Mathematics Performance Training under the guidance of professors Marian Pantiruc, Radu Strugariu and Marcel Roman.

TUIASI medalist students at SEEMOUS 2025 stated that this Olympiad shaped them both academically and personally and the success motivates them to continue to improve their knowledge and get involved in projects where they can apply these skills.

"SEEMOUS is a high-level competition that tests both creativity in problem solving and the ability to quickly apply fundamental mathematical knowledge. The topics are challenging, requiring not only a good theoretical understanding, but also strategic thinking and an ingenious approach. Also, the limited time adds an additional factor of difficulty, testing the ability to effectively manage problem solving. Obtaining the silver medal at SEEMOUS 2025 represents for me a confirmation of my passion and dedication to mathematics. It was a challenging experience, which helped me develop my analytical thinking, ability to work under pressure and problem-solving skills at an internationally competitive level", said Mihai Bandur, student at the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers.
