Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor voiced his hope on Wednesday that the draft budget would be ready next week, adding that no coalition meeting had taken place regarding this topic, only technical discussions.
"There was no coalition meeting. It was a technical discussion with the Finance Ministry and the deputy prime ministers and the prime minister," Kelemen Hunor said at Parliament, when asked when the draft budget would be ready.
Regarding the possibility of a final version of the budget being agreed on Friday, he said: "I do not think so, as the prime minister is leaving for Brussels. I believe we will have a coalition meeting next week."
According to Kelemen Hunor, there will be a vote in Parliament on the budget "when the Government submits it." "I hope the draft budget will be ready next week. Now you know how it is with hope. The spending caps law must be approved first, then the budget law. So next week, if we have a coalition meeting on Monday or Tuesday, we will know more. At this point I cannot tell you more," the UDMR chairman said.
Asked whether the 6.2 percent deficit would be observed in the state budget, he replied: "Of course it will be observed in the state budget. The reality must be the same at the end of the year, at 6.2 percent. I believe it is realistic to speak of a deficit between 6.2 and 6.4 percent."
Kelemen Hunor brought to mind a proposal regarding pensioners: "I know of a single draft, a single proposal that I put forward and that Grindeanu also put forward - a one-off payment for pensioners in 2026 of up to 3,000 lei or for those whose pensions are below 3,000 lei. A one-off payment, as it was in 2025. When it will be made, in the first half of the year or the second half of the year, I do not know. It is not an extraordinarily large amount, but this payment must be made, because it concerns precisely those people who are the most vulnerable."
