Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) President Kelemen Hunor believes that an armistice is necessary in Ukraine, without which peace negotiations cannot be discussed.

Asked in a Digi 24 show if peace in Ukraine is close, he replied: "No. It's not. The armistice is close, I hope, but peace, which means negotiations, talks, and at some point, of course, a peace agreement, I think it's still far away. (...) Until we see in which direction things are going and what the terms of the agreement will be, I say there is still a long way to go. You need to reach the point where an armistice of 30 days or 60 days is announced."

According to the UDMR leader, until an armistice exists, peace negotiations cannot be discussed.

"How the armistice will look, what the conditions will be from one side and the other - that's another matter. But from an armistice to a peace treaty is a long way. Because here we are talking about nearly 20% of Ukraine's territory, about the presence of Russians in this territory, about the stubbornness - in the best sense of the word - of the Ukrainians not to accept giving up territory, and many, many other aspects. (...) So, we need to be aware that peace is needed, and first of all, an armistice is needed. And after that, of course, some extremely sophisticated negotiations, so that Ukraine can become a functional and sovereign state," explained the UDMR leader.

Referring to relations with the United States, he believes that Romania should have had relations in the Republican area.

"We should have had relations in the Republican area, I am talking about the Romanian state, about the state institutions, about those who have the capacity to make such efforts and explain why Mr. Georgescu's candidacy was banned. Because if you go and explain, it will be understood, as we are not talking only about a person who may say nonsense. We are talking about mercenaries, we are talking about paramilitary forces, we are talking about an issue that has nothing to do with the democratic game and has nothing to do with a conservative or progressive ideology. But we don't have, and this is acknowledged by state institutions, including the foreign minister, communication channels with the Republican area, because Romania, under Klaus Iohannis' mandate, especially in the last five years, made the mistake of not having ties with Republicans. It is an unforgivable mistake, and today it is evident that with the Trump administration, institutionally, it is hard to get in," argued Kelemen Hunor.
