UDMR (democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) leader Kelemen Hunor on Friday, during the meeting of the Council of Union Representatives (CRU) in Targu Mures, stated that his organization showed that there must be only one candidate from the governing coalition for the presidential election, because otherwise none of them might enter the second round.

"We said that from the coalition side we must have only one candidate. Of course, if we understand what is happening now in society, we must not make the mistake of the majority governing coalition proposing more candidates, starting with more candidates. I imagine having two candidates, not polarizing this round, not polarizing the votes and not remaining without reserves for the second round. Those of us who believe that we can come up with a candidate for the presidency may have to think very deeply in the coming days, political decision-makers may have to think very deeply about the direction in which we are going to go. But it is not possible for everyone in the coalition to come up with a candidate, because none of them may enter the second round. In the last few days I have made some proposals regarding the people who I believe can start the presidential elections," Kelemen Hunor said, according to the official translation.

The UDMR leader specified that the chairs of the political parties in the governing coalition should not compare their strengths in the next elections, "because they are leading the government and that is what they should focus on."

"We need to find a candidate who can unite society, who can address society, who is able to formulate programmes and messages with which the majority of citizens can identify. It is possible to find such people including from the academic environment and we have proposed one or two names. It is possible to search among former politicians who are close to the political area. I will not repeat the names because these names have been mentioned several times. So it is important not to postpone for a long period and to decide as quickly as possible," Kelemen Hunor said.

The head of the UDMR said that the electoral year was planned to end on December 8, but that the CCR's decision means that there will also be elections in 2025. AGERPRES
