UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) chair Kelemen Hunor believes that the Constitutional Court's decision on the law regarding magistrates' pensions cannot be postponed for much longer, because "they can't invent anything anymore", adding that the other law, on retirement in the military area, is also being prepared.

"I don't think it can be postponed for very long. Last week they postponed it because they received some documents, as far as I know, but I want to believe that next time, in February, they will finally make a decision, because they can't invent anything anymore. Looking from this perspective, it is clear that this is indeed the promised reform and, beyond the promises, the government is giving a signal that it can govern more justly and correctly. And that is important, because increased taxes, increased excise duties, inflation have reduced purchasing power and people feel this burden and you cannot continue to legitimately say that you want to make spending cuts if on the other hand you are unable to make these cuts. Because that is how we can maintain a balance, that is how we can reduce state spending and give, at least in a year, in two years, more to the citizen", Kelemen Hunor told Euronews Romania on Monday evening, agerpres reports.

He added that the law on military pensions is also being prepared.

"Of course, the other law is also being prepared, the one regarding retirement in the military area. Here, the two ministers - of Defence and Interior - can give the details, because last week, if I understood correctly, they received from the prime minister the task of preparing a draft in the local and central administration as well. We need to see this year which institutions need to be merged, which need to abolished, what companies are not functioning, where we can intervene to operate cuts. Why does the Ombudsman need offices in the counties, for instance? Why does the Consumer Protection at the Bucharest headquarters needs to have hundreds of employees, when consumer protection needs to be done in the territory, not in Bucharest, at the headquarters. And you can give many, many such examples where we can reduce, we can restructure the central apparatus and the local budgetary apparatus," said the UDMR leader.

Asked how long it will take for these things to happen, he indicated that the deputy prime ministers and ministers have been discussing this since last year, in October, when Oana Gheorghiu stepped in.

"Yes, she is the one in charge with this part, there were meetings at the Government level and I hope that at some point they will come up with some proposals in the coalition and the coalition will assume what needs to be assumed. Investments must continue, including under PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), because public investments still keep the economy moving," the UDMR president explained.

According to him, the coalition is "always complicated", being composed of five actors, with legitimate interests for each party and extremely different ideologies.

"And harmonising all these ideological differences, legitimate interests is not very easy," added the UDMR leader.
