UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) leader Kelemen Hunor acknowledged, on the day of the vote on the investiture of the Muresan Government, that the chances of it being approved were slim.
'If we take into account the statements made by all the leaders in Parliament, then the chances are low. There are not the 233 votes needed to invest the Government. So, from my point of view, we will certainly complete the procedure today, as we agreed together, but I do not see those votes going beyond 170 or 171. There may, of course, be another 10, 12 or 20 votes in Parliament, but I do not see where the votes up to 233 would come from if everyone sticks to the statements and announcements they have made in recent days,' he told RFI radio broadcaster on Wednesday.
The UDMR leader believes that a common objective cannot be achieved without compromise, agerpres reports.
'For years, and especially in the past six months, there have been such confrontational statements that it is difficult to eventually reach common ground, even when you have a common objective. I am convinced that we, USR (Save Romania Union), PNL (National Liberal Party) and PSD (Social Democratic Party) all want a fully empowered Government. The situation we have reached is catastrophic. And if I step outside Parliament for a moment and look at the current Parliament, it gives me a headache. I am appalled that, after 140, almost 150 days, we are still unable to vote in a fully empowered Government. (...) You cannot enter into a civil political war or total war in politics (...). Without compromise, you cannot achieve a common objective, a common goal. So if you want to serve the common good, you also have to seek compromises. That's how it is. You cannot do it only with the sword, the rifle or the machine gun. If someone disagrees with me, then they are surely my enemy. This perception, this idea, is completely wrong in a society, and I believe this is where things have consistently gone wrong in recent times,' Kelemen Hunor said.
