Dozens of people gathered in Cluj-Napoca on Tuesday to mark four years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, at a rally held in Union Square and organised by the Cluj branch of the Ukrainian Youth Association of Romania.
Participants carried the flags of Ukraine, Romania and the European Union, as well as banners bearing messages such as 'Peace in Romania goes through Ukraine', 'Europe must choose the side of freedom', 'Ukraine protects Europe', 'Let us not allow the war to advance westwards' and 'Stop Putin', agerpres reports.
Among other moments, demonstrators sang the Ukrainian national anthem, while speakers stressed the importance of solidarity.
'Solidarity is a word that is often spoken, but over the past four years its meaning has changed. It is no longer merely a privilege we extend to our neighbours; it has become an obligation. Romania has experience of an occupying Russia and knows what aggression against a neighbouring state means. That is why we must be far more resolute and support Ukraine not only in words but through concrete actions. Ukraine is not defending only its own independence, but also our democracy and security,' said Vasile Ruscovan, a representative of an association supporting the Ukrainian community.
