In two years, Ukraine will have an education system accepted in the European Union, Ukrainian Ambassador to Bucharest Ihor Prokopchuk told a news conference on Tuesday.
"From 2027, we will have in Ukraine an education system accepted in the European Union. We will align our education system with that of the European Union. We are adding one more year of schooling in order to have 12 years of basic education. The idea is to let young people (...) choose the direction they want to take. This fits EU standards and we were all preparing for it," the diplomat stated.
He argued that, "unfortunately, there have been manipulations, distorted information or simply fake news regarding this reform in Ukraine."
The ambassador pointed out that his country has joined international treaties which guarantee the rights of minorities and that "these create the framework of obligations towards national minorities."
At the same time, he brought to mind that Ukraine has, regarding its EU integration file, a roadmap on protecting the rights of minorities.
"We want to make sure that we are in line with the best European standards on protecting minorities," he said.
The deputy head of the regional military administration in Chernivtsi, Roman Greba, said that there are 63 schools in this area where teaching is carried out in Romanian and in 53 of them instruction is entirely in Romanian, namely in 34 high schools, 18 secondary schools and one primary school.
From 2027, he said, there will be in the Chernivtsi region one high school with teaching in Romanian and nine bilingual ones (Romanian and Ukrainian).
Ambassador Prokopchuk underscored that the most recent census in Ukraine took place in 2001, when 151,000 people declared themselves Romanian citizens. The 2022 census did not take place because of the war, he mentioned.
