Rector of the "George Emil Palade" University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology (UMFST) in Targu Mures, Professor Dr. Leonard Azamfirei and Romanian Football Federation President (FRF) Razvan Burleanu signed a partnership protocol on Monday to promote education and research in the area of sports, aiming to increase participation and performance in sporting activities.

"First of all, within this partnership, we want to focus on developing joint educational programmes. At the same time, we want, for the first time, to turn our attention to research. No one has talked about the importance of research in Romanian sports or actually done anything to ensure this synergy, which I believe exists today between us here in Targu Mures, can take us far and make us a success model for other sports, and even for other countries (...) A matrix developed in 2021 showed the impact of football in economic, social, and public health terms. Until that time, no one internationally had developed any kind of analysis to show the impact of sports and football in these three areas. Today, this matrix, this study, is implemented in over 40 countries in Europe," showed Razvan Burleanu.

According to him, the partnership between FRF and UMFST Targu Mures was the initiative of former athlete Gabriela Szabo, now a scientific researcher at the Advanced Centre for Medical and Pharmaceutical Research at UMFST Targu Mures.

"Gabriela Szabo was the first to make me promise, and my colleagues, those involved in football, know that our approach is to deliver more than we promise. Another area of collaboration we want to focus on is the transfer of expertise and consultancy. Those of you who work here, whether as professors or students, should be very proud, just as I was when I met the Rector, that in Romania, and not in Bucharest but in a provincial city, you have this kind of approach that you might only expect to see in top Western universities. And keep in mind that we work with top Western universities on all our major projects. So be proud of this environment. We also want to venture into the field of innovation and technology. Yes, you're already connected to top global companies. We want to connect as well. We acknowledge this need, just as you, as a university, have accessed many European funds, why not do it together?," Razvan Burleanu added.

Gabriela Szabo said during the ceremony that Romanian sports need research and highly trained people because sports can no longer be practiced empirically, either nationally or internationally.

"Because we are not just talking about excellence or performance in sports, but about everything the word ‘sport' entails. So here at UMFST, especially within the Research Center, there are extremely well-prepared people who can help us train in sports (...). For me, it is a great joy because since I retired from competitive sports, specifically in 2004, I have always emphasised how important human resources are in sports and how well-trained our human resources must be, so that sports and athletic performance can have a future. Today, here at UMFST, we are not just signing a collaboration protocol - we are building a bridge between education and sports performance. I sincerely hope that at least the Transylvania region, if not all of Romania, will come and engage with everything UMFST has to offer," said Gabriela Szabo. AGERPRES
