Unemployment rate dips to 5.9 pct in September

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.9 pct at the end of September, down 0.1 percentage points from the August rate of 6 pct, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said on Thursday.

The number of unemployed (aged 15 to 74) estimated for September 2016 is 520,000, down from the 529,000 jobless registered in the month before, and also from the 630,000 persons registered in the same month of 2015.

By gender, at 6.7 percent, the male unemployment rate was 1.9 percentage points higher than the female unemployment rate (4.8 percent), reads the release.

For adults aged 25 to 74, the estimated unemployment rate is 4.9 percent (5.7 for men and 3.8 percent for women); 77.9 percent of the total estimated number of unemployed in September fall in this age bracket.

According to the definition of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the unemployed are persons aged 15-74 who simultaneously meet the following 3 conditions: they do not have a job, they are available to start work in the following two weeks, and have been actively seeking work any time during the last four weeks.
