U.S. ambassador Kavalec attends celebration of Targu Mures American Corner's 12th anniversary

Kathleen Kavalec

U.S. ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec participated on Friday in the celebration of 12 years since the opening of the American Corner in Targu Mures as a section of the Mures County Library, with 3rd and 4th grade students from the 'Unirea' National College attending the event.

"Today we had the joy of celebrating together the 12th anniversary of the American Corner in Targu Mures, in the presence of Her Excellency, Mrs. U.S. Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec. The diplomat also visited the headquarters of the Mures County Library. Our discussion focused on the way the Corner is organized, on the main activities, on the needs of the American Corner. Then, at the American Corner, Mrs. Ambassador met with extraordinarily smart 3rd and 4th graders from the 'Unirea' National College, there was a public reading in English. But since Her Excellency also speaks Romanian very well, this being not her first experience in our country, after the reading they engaged in a very interesting dialogue in Romanian and English about the children's favorite characters, their favorite books, about all the children's areas of interest. At the end, we had a full-blown celebration of the 12-year anniversary, with joyous tunes," the director of the Mures County Library Monica Avram declared for AGERPRES.

Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec read to the children from Dr. Seuss' story The Cat in the Hat, in English.

"The reading was in English. The children also had copies in Romanian in case they did not understand something in English, but they understood perfectly. Afterwards, the discussions were also in English and it was a truly pleasant surprise for the Embassy delegation to find that such young children master English so well," emphasized Monica Avram.
