US, Moldova envoys among diplomats presenting credentials to President Nicusor Dan

President Nicusor Dan on Tuesday received at Cotroceni Presidential Palace the designated ambassadors of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Mitu, the United States of America, Darryl Nirenberg, and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Samantha Priyadarshana Weerasinghe Pathirana, who presented their letters of credence.

According to a press release from the Presidential Administration, talks between President Nicusor Dan and Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg focused on the shared commitment to expand and deepen the Romanian-American Strategic Partnership and to tap its strong potential in key areas of mutual interest, including security and defence, trade and investment, energy and transport infrastructure and new technologies. The release also highlighted Romania's geostrategic position and its potential to serve as an increasingly important logistical and operational hub.

The US ambassador in turn conveyed the Washington Administration's appreciation for Romania's role in the region as a reliable ally of the United States and a promoter of the transatlantic relationship, as well as for the country's commitment to increasing defence spending and investing in its own deterrence capabilities.

During talks with the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania, Mihai Mitu, Nicusor Dan assured him that Moldova remains a key foreign policy priority for Romania, which will continue to provide substantial bilateral support across all relevant areas and to mobilise external partners in this effort.

Regarding the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, Romania will continue to support progress in the accession process and provide technical assistance, including for the transposition of legislation and the adoption of the EU acquis, the release said.

Another important area of cooperation between the two countries remains the attraction of foreign investment in the Republic of Moldova, as well as the development of infrastructure and interconnection projects and the strengthening of Moldova's security and resilience.

During the discussion with the Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to Romania, Samantha Priyadarshana Weerasinghe Pathirana, the Romanian president underlined the country's interest in deepening bilateral cooperation, built over nearly 70 years of diplomatic relations.

The potential to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as economic exchanges, education and tourism was also highlighted. The Romanian president expressed appreciation for the presence in Romania of Sri Lankan citizens working in various economic sectors.

Non-resident diplomatic representatives accredited to Romania were also received: the designated Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, Cynthia Marie Mayer Zavala; the designated Ambassador of the Principality of Andorra, Carles Jordana Madero; the designated Ambassador of New Zealand, Jennifer Jean Troup; the designated Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Paul Schmit; the designated Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica, Eliana Villalobos Cardenas; the designated Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Khadija Ossoble Ali; and the designated Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia, Raimonds Jansons.

During the discussions with the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, Cynthia Marie Mayer Zavala, President Nicusor Dan expressed interest in relaunching and revitalising bilateral relations with Ecuador at political, economic, commercial, cultural and educational levels in order to capitalise on existing potential and deepen cooperation between the two states.

The Romanian president underlined Ecuador's role as a partner sharing similar views with Romania and the European Union, with which Romania wishes to develop active cooperation both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks.

The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the partnership between Romania and Ecuador in a spirit of cooperation and mutual benefit.

During the meeting with the Ambassador of the Principality of Andorra, Carles Jordana Madero, President Nicusor Dan welcomed the very good bilateral relations and political cooperation between Romania and Andorra, as 2026 marks 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states.

The prospects for further developing bilateral, economic and sectoral cooperation were also discussed, including progress in EU-Andorra relations and strengthening Romanian-Andorran dialogue within the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

During the meeting between President Nicusor Dan and the Ambassador of New Zealand to Romania, Jennifer Jean Troup, the two sides highlighted their shared vision on major foreign policy issues and the importance of strengthening dialogue on security matters, particularly regarding hybrid threats, in the current complex geopolitical context. Shared values, together with the European Union-New Zealand partnership, provide a solid basis for intensifying bilateral cooperation.

In discussions with the Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Paul Schmit, the Romanian president welcomed the very good relations between Romania and Luxembourg, based on long standing friendship, historical ties and a strong European partnership.

The president praised close cooperation in the field of defence and thanked Luxembourg for its military presence in the NATO battlegroup at Cincu, describing it as clear evidence of allied solidarity and an important contribution to the Alliance's deterrence posture on the Eastern Flank. Bilateral and economic cooperation as well as coordination within the EU were also discussed.

During the meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica, Eliana Villalobos Cardenas, Nicusor Dan highlighted Costa Rica's role as a key partner of Romania in Latin America.

The Romanian president expressed readiness to intensify cooperation in all areas of common interest, with a focus on cybersecurity, environmental protection, renewable energy, agriculture and tourism.

Nicusor Dan also emphasised that Romania appreciates the consistent support of Costa Rica for the country's accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and expressed confidence that this support will continue in the period ahead.

During discussions with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Khadija Ossoble Ali, the president welcomed the long tradition of cooperation spanning more than 60 years, which offers favourable prospects for further development of bilateral dialogue.

He also expressed Romania's interest in deepening bilateral dialogue with the Federal Republic of Somalia on issues of common interest, particularly in the fields of security and education.

In the discussion with the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia, Raimonds Jansons, Nicusor Dan highlighted the very good bilateral relations as well as prospects for cooperation, with a focus on security and defence. Romania and Latvia share similar objectives related to ensuring security and strengthening the allied posture on the Eastern Flank. In this regard, coordination within NATO, European defence development initiatives and regional formats such as the Bucharest Nine and the Three Seas Initiative remains very important.

He also underlined that Romania's continued participation in the Enhanced Air Policing mission in the Baltic airspace will go on, reflecting the country's strong commitment to collective defence and the security of the Euro-Atlantic area, the Presidential Administration press release added.
