Chair of Save Romania Union (USR) Dominic Fritz said Romania has shown it is a reliable ally by supporting the deployment of additional US forces on its territory.

He expressed hope that Romania will soon see 'concrete benefits,' including with regard to the Visa Waiver programme.

"Parliament today voted in favour of the decision of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) to allow additional US forces access to Romanian territory. USR MPs also voted in favour. We have a Romania-US Strategic Partnership Agreement and, as NATO members, we are part of a team that protects one another," the USR leader wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

According to him, Romania has demonstrated that it is "a reliable ally that understands the international stakes" and acts accordingly.

"I hope the US administration also understands this and that we will soon see concrete benefits for Romania, including regarding the Visa Waiver programme, where Romanian diplomacy has made further progress in discussions," Fritz said.

In his view, criticism of the war in Iran is legitimate, but the CSAT decision brings "greater safety and security" through the presence of US forces.

"Of course it is legitimate to criticise the war in Iran, which is not our war. But those who are now stirring up tensions with apocalyptic scenarios that scare people are in fact playing Russia's game. Russia wants a Romania that is as weak and as isolated as possible. The new military capabilities to be stationed here are defensive. Today's decision brings us greater safety and security precisely through the presence of US forces," the USR leader added.
