USR leader's statements, harmful to rule of law, suggest DNA is political tool (JustMin Gorghiu)

Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu rejected on Friday, in a press conference held in Targu Mures, the accusations made by Save Romania Union (USR) regarding the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) case file related to the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines, saying that USR leader Catalin Drula's statements suggesting that DNA is a political tool are harmful in a state governed by the rule of law.

"As Minister of Justice, I must tell you that I categorically reject the statements and allegations launched in the public space by the USR leadership regarding the case file drawn up by DNA in connection with the purchase of vaccines during the pandemic. I want you to understand that the recent statements made by the USR leader, Catalin Drula, are harmful to the rule of law in Romania and the fact that they suggest that DNA is a political tool brings a great deal of toxicity to Romanian society. He has practically revived the discourse that the PSD [the Social Democratic Party] had under Mr Dragnea and I think that this kind of attack on justice is one that damages Romanian society. He is simply saying that DNA can do its job with any politician or any citizen, except when it comes to USR members, because then he considers DNA's activity to be political witch hunt. I consider these statements by USR leaders an error, not only political, but an error that causes damage to Romania's image abroad," Alina Gorghiu told a press conference held at the Mures National Liberal Party (PNL) headquarters.
