USR (Save Romania Union) leader Dacian Ciolos reproached President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca for not informing the population about the way Romania is preparing for a possible armed conflict in our vicinity.

He told a press conference held on Tuesday at the Palace of Parliament, at the end of the meeting of the National Bureau of USR, that concerns were growing on this topic.

"Concerns are growing now, especially as there is a risk of an armed conflict arising not far from the Romanian border. You see that we are getting information from heads of state elsewhere, from officials in countries other than Romania. But I never heard an official from Romania, like President Iohannis or Prime Minister Ciuca addressing the matter or explaining how Romania is preparing for this possible conflict. I know about a CSAT (Supreme Council for Country Defence) meeting being convened, but that will only happen on Wednesday. The President of Romania, who is the commander of the armed forces, should come out and tell us how Romania is preparing for this conflict. And I am obviously talking now about that information that can be made public, for the Romanian society, the people need to be informed, they need to know how we stand and how we prepare," Ciolos said.

He said that President Iohannis could address the issue in a public statement or at the beginning of the parliamentary session.

According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to "sow distrust" among EU member states and "destabilize" them. Ciolos also criticized AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians) for electing an honorary president who has "a declared pro-Russian position."

"We see Russia's aggression - or Putin's aggression, in particular. It has long been his intention to use all means to destabilize the EU and to sow mistrust among EU partners. He does this openly, even more covertly. But we can also see how, not that far away - let me insert a brake here - we can see how AUR now has a pro-Russian honorary president with a pro-Russian speech. So this is what Russia brings us and what brings tension to Romania," he said.

On the other hand, Ciolos recalled the commitments of the NATO member states in case of an armed conflict, Agerpres informs.
