Save Romania Union (USR) national leader Elena Lasconi, who will participate in presidential consultations on Wednesday, supports the development of a defence capacity at the level of European states, as well as the fact that peace negotiations must take place in the presence of Ukraine.
The delegation representing USR at the presidential talkswill also include Dominic Fritz, Ionu Mosteanu and Stefan Palarie.
"I have always said that any peace agreement is concluded with Ukraine at the table. We should achieve long-term autonomy, the development of a defence capacity at the level of European states, which would discourage the Russian Federation, and develop means of projection of power at a global level," Lasconi told AGERPRES.
She is also in favour of defence investments in Romania, which should produce weapons and ammunition at NATO standards. The USR leader mentioned that nationwide production would also allow a shortening of delivery times.
"Romania can be a strong voice regionally. The most important resource we have is the brains. We have super-intelligent people. Why couldn't we invest massively in Romania's entire defence industry and become relevant? (...) Especially since we have skilled people. I don't see a problem in investing in the defence industry, but don't pay them badly. There was a strike recently at Cugir, precisely for this reason. Vision is needed. I think we could become super relevant for the whole region and keep very close to Poland, which is an example for me," Lasconi said.
She welcomed the initiative of the presidential consultations, given that Ilie Bolojan is Romania's interim president. Also, such talks contribute to ensuring stability nationwide.
In her opinion, Bolojan should explain the reasons why Romania supports Ukraine and how important that is to the future of Europe.
"I think he should explain better - because that has been missing so far - why we support Ukraine, what we have helped it with concretely and how important that is to the future of Romania and the future of Europe. Because it is very important for Ukraine to win the war," Lasconi said.
Bolojan has invited the national leaders of the political parties and formations in Parliament for February 26 consultations to prepare the country's position at an extraordinary meeting of the European Council on March 6 in Brussels.
