Save Romania Union (USR) Chair Elena Lasconi believes that President Klaus Iohannis's resignation comes very late and does not provide answers to "the questions that have been plaguing the country" for two months now.
"A president disconnected from reality, out of step, and who disregards the people who put their trust in him! Klaus Iohannis's resignation comes very late. Much too late to be considered honorable. And it doesn't provide us answers to the questions that have been plaguing this country for two months now: why did they cancel the election, how do we protect ourselves from the Russian intrusion, who protects us from manipulation, is the security of the next election granted? After 10 years with Iohannis at Cotroceni, and I say this as someone who believed in him, regrettably, Romania is more vulnerable than ever. Under his watch, democracy has fallen to pieces and this cannot be forgiven," Lasconi wrote on Facebook on Monday.
She welcomed the fact that the pressure put by the USR in Parliament "has woken Iohannis from his slumber", and mentioned that other steps are also necessary in order to get Romania back on the right track.
"We need to reposition the state institutions so that they work for the citizens, not for people who temporarily hold public office. Now, we need all hands on deck, we need to get Romania back on the right track. We need truth, justice and an authentic leader who shall keep the pro-Western course," added the USR leader.
Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation from the position of President of Romania on Monday, stating that he is stepping down in order to prevent the political crisis that would follow his possible suspension by Parliament. His resignation will take effect on February 12.
