The Valahia 2023 national exercise, regarding the simulation of a severe accident at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, takes place between October 3-5, the population being cautioned not to panic because it is not a real emergency situation.
The exercise, which will take place for 8 hours every day, is part of the Norway Grants project - "Improving nuclear security and safety in Romania - Increasing disaster resilience and preparedness for responding to nuclear and radiological events", financed through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
The general purpose of the exercise is to verify and integrate nuclear emergency response plans and procedures within the National Emergency Management System in accordance with the National Nuclear or Radiological Emergency Response Plan, as well as training the structures of response and the integration of international assistance into the national response.
The exercise is organized by the National Committee for the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN), together with the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU)/General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the National Nuclear Electric Company (SNN)/CNE Cernavoda, as well as other national organizations involved in emergency response, with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (DSA).
