The Bucharest District 1 Court ordered on Wednesday night that four protesters who attacked law enforcement officers during the protest in Victory Square be placed under house arrest.
According to judicial sources, Ciprian Pamfile, described as the leader of those inciting violence, is among those placed under house arrest.
Another man was also remanded in custody for 30 days.
'On September 15, a protest by livestock breeders took place in Victoriei Square, which shortly afterwards escalated into more widespread violence directed at law enforcement officers and their equipment, with several gendarmes injured and vehicles and other property damaged. A day earlier, a 36-year-old man from Bucharest had posted a message on TikTok urging the public to take part in the demonstration, but to do so violently. Against the wider backdrop of the violence, the case was taken over by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal. Following the investigation, five men were apprehended and identified, including the man who had incited the public to violence. The five men, aged between 33 and 51, are accused of offences including assaulting a public official, criminal damage, disturbing public order and incitement to violence. They have been formally charged and were detained overnight. Today, prosecutors will seek their pre-trial detention for 30 days,' Diana Calinescu, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal, said on Wednesday.
The man who incited people to violence is named Ciprian Pamfile and is a known supporter of Calin Georgescu. He has previously taken part in several demonstrations in support of the former presidential candidate. At Tuesday's protest in Victoriei Square, he appeared bare-chested and was identified and detained by law enforcement officers.
According to the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal, investigations carried out so far have established that 10 gendarmes were injured during Tuesday's protest, with some requiring medical treatment. Several items of property were also damaged, including a gendarmerie vehicle, safety barriers and property belonging to STB.
'The protesters are accused of attacking law enforcement officers with metal pipes, clubs and various objects thrown at them, including kerbstones, bottles and metal barriers. They also destroyed the dividing barriers separating the traffic lanes belonging to STB,' the prosecutor's office representative said.
Another protester was detained in connection with the violence in Victoriei Square and is being investigated separately in a case handled by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest District 1 Court.
In addition, another instigator from Pamfile's group was stopped by police while driving and was found to have a handgun in his car.
