An Afghan national, a member of a migrant smuggling network who displayed violent behaviour, was restrained by border police officers in the city of Timisoara.
On January 15, two Pakistani nationals were placed in pre-trial detention for migrant smuggling after being caught during an operation carried out by border police officers in Timisoara.
According to a press release issued by the Border Police, as part of the ongoing investigation in this case, officers stopped two more individuals in traffic the following day in Timisoara - an Afghan national and a Romanian citizen - both of whom were subject to warrants to be brought in as suspects in a criminal case, accoding to Agerpres.
During the operation, the two individuals failed to comply with the lawful orders of the border police officers, while the Afghan national was uncooperative and displayed violent behaviour, destroying several pieces of evidence.
As a result, border police officers restrained the two individuals and took them to the headquarters of the Timisoara Territorial Border Police Inspectorate for further checks.
Officers established that, between November 2025 and January 2026, the Afghan national and the Romanian citizen, together with the two Pakistani nationals arrested on January 15, had carried out activities involving the recruitment, guidance, escorting, sheltering and transport of migrants, with the aim of facilitating the illegal crossing of the state border.
The Afghan national and his accomplice were taken into custody and are to be brought before a judge with a proposal for pre-trial detention.
